Shot Blasting is used to remove flash, burrs, scale, and rust. Shot blasting is also used to prepare the surface of a part for coating by removing surface contaminants and providing a surface profile for increased coating adhesion. Precision shot peening, on the other hand, is used to increase fatigue life by inducing compressive stresses on the surface metal which increases the resistance to fatigue failures.
